Is AI actually the right tool for your problem?

June 14, 2026 · 5 min read

We turn down AI work. Not often, but enough that it's worth explaining when AI is the wrong answer — because the cheapest project is the one you don't build.

Three questions

1. Is the task fuzzy or crisp? If the rules are clear — "when a form comes in, create a CRM record" — you don't want AI, you want an automation. It's cheaper, faster, and it never has a bad day. AI earns its keep on fuzzy work: reading unstructured text, holding a conversation, synthesizing across messy sources.

2. What does a wrong answer cost? AI is probabilistic. If a rare mistake is catastrophic and unrecoverable, you need a human gate — and sometimes that gate makes the whole thing not worth automating.

3. Is the data there? AI is only as good as the corpus behind it. If your knowledge lives in three people's heads and a folder no one can find, the first project is data, not AI.

What we'd tell you on a call

Most businesses have a mix: a few crisp tasks that want automation, one or two fuzzy ones that genuinely want AI, and a process problem hiding underneath both. A two-week AI Audit sorts them into a costed plan — and the fee credits toward whatever you decide to build.

If the answer is "you don't need us yet," we'll say that too.
